NEW TECHNOLOGY
New technologies were needed to break through enemy lines. A very severe weapon in the war was the poison gas. The fumes from this caused vomiting, blindness, and suffocation. Eventually both sides developed gas masks. Later the British introduced the armored tank into battle. The tanks were slow and mechanically unreliable. But they were very strong and could crush through barbed wire and cross trenches. World war I was the first to use aircraft in war. The airplanes were first used as spies then they went to artillery. They had machine guns on them. The machine guns were timed to fire through the aircrafts propeller as it spun so that the bullets didn't hit the propeller.
